An Outlook Of How Prisoner Transport Systems Operate

By Carol Hall

Convicts deserve a pleasant journey whenever they are being transferred to another prison. Once indicted of a crime, prisoner transport systems are used to ferry convicts to the cells. The safest mode of transporting inmate is through the airlines. This is because of the dangers that are eminent when inmates are ferried through road networks. Furthermore, the airlines are usually guarded by at least ten military officials and two prison staffs.

Guarded vans are used to ferry the inmates to an airport awaiting transit to a particular destination. There have been several escape attempts made by allies of inmates who are to be ferried to a particular location. Some have been successful while some have ended with no luck. In most developed countries, the airlines are the most common means of ferrying convicts. The same however does not apply to third world countries since air transportation is quite expensive.

Several factors determine the right transportation mode for inmates. One of them is the crimes committed by an indicted criminal. In this case, murders or any dangerous convicts are ferried individually. Those who have been convicted of little crimes are ferried through road as a group. On average, most countries allocate a certain portion of their budget to inmate transportation yearly.

There have been several cases of reckless driving in vehicles that ferry convicts. This issue has drawn a lot of public criticism because most correctional officers seem to be ignorant about the safety of inmates. In response to this matter, most correctional facilities in the world have installed speed governors that can be controlled remotely. Furthermore, both vehicles and airplanes that are used in this endeavor are thoroughly inspected before commencing the journey.

As a security measure, convict transport buses consist of wire meshed and bulletproof windows. They also comprise of segregated seats where prisoners are tied with chains on the hands, belly and legs. The driver compartment is invisible from where the prisoners seat. Correctional officers have their special seats where they can monitor inmates well. Also, radio communication and location tracking devices are installed in these vehicles.

Several countries across the globe have laws that sensitize on safety standards when convicts undergo transit. For instance, before a vehicle is assigned to a prison, it undergoes a thorough inspection. The vehicle is usually tailor made for transiting convicts. A medical expert should be in the vehicle when convicts are transported to another location to treat any illness that may arise.

The transportation routes chosen for ferrying inmates are usually inspected days before the activity commences. In cases where escapes or attacks on prison vehicles are eminent, these routes are changed immediately. Furthermore, trips may be canceled by heads of the correctional facility if a threat is imminent. It usually takes a maximum of nine hours to ferry convicts via road. On the other hand, it takes a maximum of twelve hours via airlines.

There are nations where inmate transportation takes place via ships and speed boats. This mode is deemed temporary because water navigation takes time. This applies to island countries or jurisdictions where boats and ships are commonly used to ferry people. Irrespective of the means of ferrying inmates, the vessels used are supposed to be licensed and inspected regularly.
