Reasons To Consider Structural Insulated Panels In Building

By Charles Baker

Structural panels with insulation have become popular building materials over a long time. They are highly preferred due to their flexibility in their usage. One can use them to construct the ceiling, wall, and floor of a building like any other material. Their structured composite is usually polystyrene foam, extruded polystyrene and composite honeycomb sandwiched between cement, magnesium oxide board or metal. Here are benefits of using structural insulated panels in construction.

Strong and lightweight. This material is lighter compared with other types of construction materials. Therefore, they make the building process more comfortable to handle since they require minimal effort to assemble them. The fact that they may be light does not translate to being weak. They are sturdy and can withstand severe environmental conditions.

Can withstand mold and insect infestation. Most materials used to make the panel casing are waterproof making them easy to endure the growth of mold. Therefore, there are few chances of mold-related infections. Their waterproof nature makes them ideal for use in places with high moisture content. Besides that, the composite materials do not have essential nutrients required by most fungus and bacteria that cause the infestation.

Offer a lot of advantages to occupants. Those living in building with these materials can enjoy a lot of benefits. To start with, it is airtight reducing the rate of heat loss. For that reason, one does not have to worry about the cost incurred when heating a room during the cold season. They are also suitable options for separating office compartments since they are cheap to use. They have a soundproofing capacity which reduces the costs incurred using other expensive measures.

Easy to design and build. Architectures have the flexibility to make any design using this building material. They can even use computer-aided devices to get the most accurate design for a particular structure. They are also easy to build due to their light weight and their pre-design. Therefore, they cut the duration used in construction by a half and does not require any specialized tools.

Environmental friendly. There are different methods that these products conserve the environment. To start with, they reduce the rate of lumbering which has become a significant issue over time. Their energy efficiency decreases the rate of greenhouse gas emission which is a great contributor to climate change. They also reduce the rate of waste since they are factory manufactured and there are fewer wastes during construction.

Offer resistance to the hurricane and seismic movement. SIPs are ideal products to use in areas that are prone to hurricanes and seismic activities. Their high level of stability guarantees the safety of a house that has used them in withstanding such natural events. Even so, the capacity to design them to fit a particular architectural design provides an opportunity to design and construct a house to withstand such activities.

There a couple of disadvantages despite the advantages of using these products. Those that have poor fire rating puts occupants at risk of fire burns or smoke inhalation since they are airtight. Such a situation is common when the drywall is faulty. Also, SIPs that are poorly maintained can easily rot or get infested with rodents. Therefore, one should look for those that have a waterproof casing and have boric acid to reduce chances of infestation.
