How To DIY Personalized Wooden Signs

By Daniel Butler

Doing arts and crafts are simple and easy to create by your own. Just bring your imaginative side, as well as your creative thinking, and you are good to go. Your DIY projects can be everyday items that are used in the house with or without function. Personalized wooden signs are some of the projects you are able to do.

These signs may for any purpose that you thought of. It may be possible that you will give these as presents for your friends, or even that special someone. The reason may also be a project idea as gift for your family. No matter the occasion and season, this is one DIY that will serve as a gift to anyone.

It does not have to be expensive. Secondhand or unused items may become your source of materials. As long as they are still salvageable and usable, you may add these as decorations over your signs.

Your project would not proceed if you do not have wood. It does not matter if what you found is big or small. Just saw it off to your preferred dimensions. If it is rough, use sandpaper to smoothen the sides. If there are chipped pieces on its sides, you can chop them off or let them stay as part of border design.

You also need writing materials. Permanent markers are great. You may use them if you like. However, the aesthetics of your sign would be greater if you use brushes. You are able to see the stroke imprints of the brush as you write your piece. Pair it with artist or acrylic paints in order to dry the inks faster.

Now that you have your writing materials, you are now ready to put on the words you like on its surface. There are endless possible phrases out there for you to choose. It may be something like an inside joke in or a motto of the family. It may be some phrases you heard or your favorite quote. If you are thinking of giving this as a gift, you may write his or her name and your message.

Let the inks dry before you put on the finishing coat. You may use any decoupage glue or water base sealer like mod podge. Brush these on the entire surface to protect the sign and its contents that you just made. If you do not like to buy this glue, you can DIY one. It only requires mixing polyvinyl acetate or PVA glue with water.

Let the glue dry up before you take it up on its place on your wall. There are two ways you can hang it. One is by using the age old method of hammering nails through it. Second is by placing vinyl decal, commonly known as wall stickers, at the back edges. The latter can save your sign and wall from any holes the nails bring.

Now, you are ready to step back and admire your work. Sit down on the couch across from it and relax. Making it DIY creates self fulfillment in yourself due to the hard work you did.
