Reducing Your Costs On Packaging: Some Tips

By Lenna Stockwell

If you have a product to sell than you probably also have some type of packaging. Often packaging costs are sky high and really eat into your overall profits. Consider the following suggestions when looking for ways to reduce your packaging costs.

First you should look at the package. The best way to reduce costs is to reduce the actual size of the packaging and that has been one of the methods used of many companies to lessen costs. The same product can be held by a smaller box or a smaller bag so use that as well. A good packaging would be thermoform plastic which can be designed and created to erase almost all excess packaging. What can protect your product are thermoform blister packs as well as displaying it for the customers, which is a good way to attract them.

Shipping costs are very high with the costs of fuel being high as well in these days so to lessen the size can really lessen your shipping costs. If you want something to weigh less then have a smaller package instead which could really ad d up to major savings in the area of shipping. The package material that you use too also affects the weight. Considered lightweights are cardboards and thermoform plastic packaging. For a better option to consider though is plastic which is more protective.

Thermoform packaging is much more versatile unlike cardboard or aluminum. The large, thin sheets of plastic are where it all starts. Heating the sheets is done first then they are forced into molds. Vacuum thermoforming is how it could be done or through the process of injection molding. A mold will be created by your thermoforming company for your product and you can use them for many months and years to come.

One great thing about thermoplastic is the high recyclability especially if you go for the custom packaging that was made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or the high-density polyethylene (HDPE). These two plastic which are polymers are mostly accepted throughout the United States by curbside recycling programs. LDPE or the low-density polyethylene is also accepted by recycling centers around the country and also PP or polypropylene. In theory though, almost all thermoplastics can be recycled.

Your best course of action would be to contact a company such as Indepak, which offers custom packaging solutions for clients in many different industries. These include design custom product packaging for retail clients and those involved in the food, medical or agricultural industries.
