The History Of Funeral Home Smithers

By Rosella Campbell

This home was started in the 1950s under the ownership of Emerson family as an evergreen funeral home.Funeral home smithers would later, through a sales deal, change in ownership to A.F.Defrane in the year 1969.. This was to change later in the year 1986 when R. A, Allan Schraderas purchased it.

The ownership of Smithers kept on changing in the subsequent years. In 1996 Allan Schrader sold it to Lowen Group and its name changed once again. It did not take long for Lowen Group to dispose it off to Alderwoods, who then become the owner for another relatively short period. In the year 2007, the Service Corporation International purchased it from Alderwoods. This organization held ownership until the year 2008, a period of one year. In December they sold it to the Let bridge, Caring Group Corporation.

This company has been in existence for more than 60 years serving people within the same area. Several changes have been effected since it was established. Some of these changes include; space has been increased gradually over the years. A number of structures have been constructed leading to improvement in efficiency in comparison to when the institution was started in the 1950s. These structures include; a big urn selection room and casket, a garage, a 100 seat chapel and a prep room. Other minor changes include renovation of the top floor that was formerly a 3 bedroom apartment to be used as an office.

Until 2012, Allan Schrader, a prior owner of the institution, worked here as a manager. However in the springs of 2012, he went to work with his sons Darren and Lawrence in their Funeral home, Kamloops. After Allan left, Paul MacDonald, who had been the owner of Funeral Home Clayton in Quesnel for many years, took over the stewardship of the institution. He had been in Clayton since his retirement.
