The Final Message Of Many Death Row Prisoners

By Patricia Burns

Death is never anything that becomes planned. This is a different case when you are a criminal in death row. Their last words are something that leaves quite the mark considering that they have lived knowing the day of execution will come. It could be professing their innocence or saying something completely existential. There is no beauty to this but they are able to find out what they have left to say is interestingly ominous.

If there was one state in the country that has the most killings of killers, it would be Texas. The final message Texas prisoners have from the Huntsville unit is recorded then posted online for those who care to know about them. There are some pretty interesting things people who are about to die in the hands of an executioner.

As much as you would like to think that there is always something significant to say before kicking the bucket, some inmates in the row beg to differ. Some give long messages to their loved ones who are present during the execution while others settle for not even saying anything. Most of the time they say their final I love yous and thank yous.

The whole ordeal must be very emotionally difficult to go through for all those involved. This includes relatives, the victims, the loved ones, the friends these inmates have made in prison, and maybe even the guards and the warden. It makes you think if the prison staff feels anything while these executions are being performed on people they have seen day in and day out for the past 9 to 10 years or more.

Most of their messages also involved God and other religious matters. They seem like they just all wanted forgiveness and an escape from the pain. Some inmates also showed their peaceful resolve with death. Ironically, there were never many mentions of hell and more were said about going to heaven and how they have found God.

In total there has been 538 executions done in Hunstville, the death row facility in Texas. Almost, always they make a statement about their God and respective religions. They show either their regret, if they are guilty of the crime, or they say their peace about what was about to happen. They also shower people with their messages of love.

While there is definitely nothing funny about the whole matter, there were still some inmates that chose to make their last statement have a comical twist. Some made their final stirring statements of conviction. A notable one was by Johnny Johnson who murdered and sexually assaulted a Leah Joette Smith in Houston and was guilty of 13 other rape cases.

He had some very strong opinions regarding how the Polunksy dungeon is place where people on the row merely just exist. He is also astonished about how unforgiving society is. He ranted on about hopelessness and how he demanded an end to death penalty. While he may be right about these statements, many experts, around 88 percent, also say that maybe there is no point to death penalty.

Many experts claim that capital punishment does not effectively decrease crime rate. If it does deter anything, it would be most likely just be petty crime. This claim does make sense, since criminals who decide to lead that life are more likely to die while doing illegal business than they are going to die by death penalty. This is something they know from the very beginning, so death should not scare them anymore.
