The first phase involves the separation of solid materials with the liquids. Air and biological methods are used in decomposition of the solid and chlorine are used in cleaning the contaminated fluid.

There are various merits associated with the use of this system. It has led to the reduction of diseases related to waste. The solids obtained from the waste are used in manufacturing organic fertilizers. The manures tend to be cheap and are friendlier to soil. Also, it has reduced the congestion found in a sewage treatment plants.
