Types Of Sports Mouthguards For Youngsters

By Joshua Campbell

There are often accidents and bumps while playing school sporting events. States often have rules that require students to wear sports mouthguards. Several types can be selected depending on what the student needs. Regardless of the type chosen, the device should fit well, be comfortable, and be cleaned regularly. Neither speech nor breathing should be restricted when wearing them in sporting events.

The device should fit without being uncomfortable. They come in many different sizes, so you should take the time to get the size that fits your mouth and jaw shape the best. If they're too big or too small they can be restrictive or painful after time. Those that are too small could easily fall out while you're on the field.

The stock guard is the most basic. It is not designed to be a perfect fit. There are different sizes and most stores can help you figure out the size you will need. It is important to have one that forms close to the shape of your jaw in order for it to fit over the teeth properly. If it is too big or small it won't provide the best protection.

The boil and bite type is the next level. This device is designed to be boiled prior to the first use. This softens the material to form to your actual tooth shape. As it cools, you put it in your mouth and bite down hard. Your teeth will leave an impression so it will fit better than the stock version. It is important to put it in the right spot in your mouth before biting down or the shape will be skewed.

The custom guards are made for students with braces or other dental devices. When they're made, they are formed with a mold of your mouth. This gives them the best fit and comfort of the three types. Those with braces may also get one for the bottom teeth to protect the expensive dental work from being damaged in sports.

Be sure to remove retainers and other non-fixed dental equipment before wearing the guards. Keeping things like this in your mouth will make the guard not fit well and could easily break the dental implement. It is best to consult your dentist if you have any type of dental implement before choosing a mouthguard and playing sports.

A crucial part of owning these is proper care. They need to be kept away from dogs and cats to prevent them from being chewed up. They should also be washed every day using a toothbrush just like when you brush your teeth. This prevents bacteria from forming which could cause other issues with your teeth and gums. Some will come with their own storage container, if not, store them in a cool dry place away from the sun.

Enjoying sports is a worldwide past time for students and adults. Having the right protective equipment is important to enjoy them safely. With the right mouth protection, you can reduce the risk of broken or chipped teeth and other mouth-related injuries.
