How To Use Roll On Trailer Jack

By Mark Robinson

One of the most dreaded things that motorists get is having a flat tire. Truck drivers suffer a lot when the vehicles get a damaged tire. However, there is a simple step by step that they can change the tires even in the absence of a mechanic using a roll on trailer jack. However, they need to ensure that it is in the right place.

Drive the truck to level ground. Do not park it at the roadside, since it might roll to the side. If you do not find a level field, park it on one side of the road and place warning signs and turn on both the indicator lights and the headlights to warn other motorists that there is some maintenance going on.

Change the gear to the parking mode. Turn off the ignition to avoid any movement that might take place when operating on the vehicle. If there are officers on the ground, alert them so that they can clear any traffic for you. This will also guarantee you of safety since some road users might ignore any warning you have put for them.

Before using the lorry, you should check whether it has been recommended for that particular weight. Some jacks are recommended for small vehicles with a low mass, while other jacks are designed for heavy trucks. If you are not sure of the weight the jack can lift without problems, and you can check out from the user manual which gives a guide on the same.

Use wedges or other objects to block the wheels from moving as you operate on this tire. Once you have confirmed that the wheels are intact, place a wooden or plastic object on this jack. This is to ensure that it does not come into contact with the surface of a lorry since it might damage the part of this truck.

Roll the jack to lift the tire off the ground until it is left supporting the vehicle. Do not distract the blocks supporting the wheels, since a slight movement might cause it to move out of its place. Do not put any part of your body under it so that you do not get hit in case of any malfunction.

Remove the nuts from the wheel and take the wheel out. If you observe any noise from the point where it contacts with the body of a vehicle, scrutinize whether it is as a result of it coming out of its place. It is dangerous to change a tire with it out of place since the vehicle might lose balance and fall on you. If there is luggage on the lorry, it is advisable to remove it before changing the tire.

After you have changed the tire, turn the jack in the opposite direction to lower the lorry to ground. Remove the blocks that you had used to prevent the wheels from moving out of the way. Drive for a short distance to check if the vehicle is in the right condition. If you observe some bouncing movements on the tire, check for pressure and inflate the other tires until they attain a similar weight.
