A Critical Look Into The Businesses In Belize

Tourism and agriculture are the two major industries in the country, hence most enterprises are based around these two industries. The sugarcane industry and the fishing industry are mostly preserved for the residents of Belize. Larger companies in the tourism sector are mostly run by non citizens, Such include the luxurious hotels. The rest of the industries are not well developed and thus, the country offers a great opportunity for investment.Basically the businesses in Belize are largely concentrated in these two sectors of the economy.

As a tourist destination, it attracts lots of tourists thus there are numerous investments in this particular sector.The tourism sector has been significantly boosted in recent days by the many tourist flocking the country.Most enterprises have invested in this line in a bid to cater for the growing demand.Resorts, villas and hostels have also been established to offer accommodation services. In San Pedro, along the beach, professional services are offered by lots of hotels and resorts.

The agricultural sector also has great potential with regard to creating business opportunities. The large tracts of land available have been used for the production of rice, bananas and even citrus fruits. Papaya and chocolate have been exported to foreign markets such as the US. Nevertheless, most of these products are largely consumed locally. The Mata Grande is a major retail center where tourists who visit country can find these products. Still, the agricultural sector possesses huge potential for growth since there is so much land that is idle.

There are also other emerging and rapidly growing industries such as the entertainment and call centre industries which offer a great opportunity for investment.

The transport sector a major area of investment. The largest transport enterprises are controlled by the novel siblings, and they offer transport services in major districts. Other investors in the transport sector own smaller companies that work along other routes around the country.

In the telecommunication sector, there are two dominant players: Belize Telemedia and Speednet communications limited. Telemedia, which is bigger, is an employer of hundreds of Belizeans. The government owns a part of it. Speednet has been operational since 2003, when it was formed.

Radio and television stations in the media industry air local programs contributing greatly to the promotion of the local film industry. The print media business such as newspapers are largely owned and controlled by individuals.

The financial sector is also quite stable with eight institutions. Four of these are local and the other four are international. The two main ones are the British Caribbean bank and the central bank of Belize. These institutions provide services such as loans, lines of credit and bank overdrafts. Such services are of importance to the businesses.

At about ninety percent, small and micro businesses account for most business enterprises found here. Most of these business enterprises belong to members of the same family. Other business enterprises, especially those in the tourism industry are run and managed by non citizens.
