Product Packaging & Your Many Options

By Lenna Stockwell

Just about every product must have some type of packaging, and using plastic for your packaging has many advantages. There are many types of plastic packaging and several common types of plastic used to create these packages. Read on and you will understand more about packaging and your options.

The process to produce and create plastic packaging is known as thermoforming or thermoform molding, and sometimes even called vacuum thermoforming. In this process, sheets of thin plastic are heated up to a certain temperature, making it easier in shaping. These are then forced into molds, to form the plastic packaging that is needed by people. There are custom thermoforming companies, including Indepak, which can create custom packaging for clients on practically any size or type of packaging.

There are various types of thermoplastic materials used in the production of these packages. Materials often used are the polyethylene terephthalate materials or PET or sometimes called PETE. Another common material used often for packaging production is polystyrene. There is also the High-density polyethylene or HDPE, another form of plastic material used in the production of packaging materials. These plastic products are recyclable, like the PET and HDPE, and these are packaging materials accepted in most recycling centers in the whole of the US.

A thermoforming company can produce all sorts of packaging, from clamshell packages to blister packs to thermoform trays. Clamshells and blister packages are quite common. Clamshells are used to hold fruit such as berries or cherry tomatoes and used as take-out food containers. However, when they are created from a stronger or thicker plastic and sealed, they are an excellent way to protect products from damage or from theft or tampering.

Blister packages usually are a mix of plastic with a backing of cardboard or perhaps a combination of foil and plastic. Medicines often are wrapped individually using a blister pack. Other items usually have a piece of cardboard on the back and the plastic is attached on the front. This allows consumers to see the product and the plastic also is quite protective. Technically a clamshell package is a blister pack that simply folds onto itself.

Plastic trays also are a big part of the thermoforming industry, and trays are need for a myriad of items. For example, if you open a bag of cookies, these are often placed in trays to protect the food items. Doctors and medical professionals use a variety of trays to hold syringes and bottles of medicine for injections. Trays can be created to have many sections and each section can be a specific size to fit a certain item securely. No matter what type of packaging you need, a thermoforming company can help you come up with a solution and create a perfect package for you.
