Keep Your Business Safe With These Commercial Fire Safety Tips

By Mark Mahaffey

As the owner of your business, you are certainly aware that a fire can do extensive damage to your office in just a few minutes. For those people who do not prepare and plan ahead for such emergencies, the loss could be very great. But if you are willing to heed a few commercial fire safety tips, you will increase the odds that you never suffer a bad fire in your business.

One of the most important things you can do is to install a fire security system in your business. Smoke and heat detectors can let you know if a fire is brewing anywhere in your building. In addition, sprinkler systems can prevent the fire from spreading out of control. Having your fire system connected to a monitoring service is also a good idea.

Another precaution you can take is to remove clutter that may be around in your business. Piles of paper, old files, newspapers and cardboard boxes are very flammable and can cause a fire to quickly blaze out of control. Also, if you attempt to put out the fire yourself, it will be much more difficult if piles of papers are burning.

Check your electrical wiring for old, frayed cords. Wiring can get old, and when it does, it presents a fire hazard. Check all of your business equipment, from computers to printers to space heaters, and make sure that the wiring is in good condition.

Fire extinguishers are another part of a good fire safety plan. If you can spray a fire with a fire extinguisher soon after it starts, you may be able to kill it before it gets so big that it causes real damage. Make sure to have plenty of fire extinguishers around in your office.

Prevention really is the best way to reduce the risk that you ever have to deal with the devastation of a bad fire in your business. Keep these tips in mind as you increase your fire security at your office!
