What To Consider When Buying A Replacement Turntable Stylus

By Gary Mitchell

A turn table is a rotating plate that holds a phonograph record while it is being played. They are round although they differ in their prices due to different features in them. The stylus is composed of a diamond tip that is attached to cartilage, and it trucks physically on record groove. Replacement turntable stylus greatly improves the sound quality if it is a brand new one. A worn out and an old one will not only produce a poor quality sound but can also damage a record.

Having a brand new stylus will increase the quality of sound produced. The difference in types of needles present means difference in the quality of sound produced. Elliptical one have the best sound production compared to conical and spherical ones.

The stylus with a tiny tip is the choice of many. This is because it fits into the groove appropriately. Buy one that has high contact with groove but minimal wear on the grove. This ensures that the sound is of high quality and also extends the life of the record.

The cost of a needle is the highest for those with highest sound quality. Good care together with appropriate protection is crucial in determining the duration of service offered by it. Protect it from coming into close contact with small debris and dust particles that damages it. There are special brushes that enhance the cleaning of the stylus. Materials and tools used during turntables replacement are. Tweezers, a replacement cartilage, screw-driver, steady hands, force gauge, replacement needle and a pair of needle-nose-pliers.

On commencing the process, check whether the cartridge carrier is removable. If it is, then remove it. Then confirm the model and make of the stylus and the turntable. Then confirm from the electronics shops whether there are parts to replace them. The old needle is removed by use of hand but if it is not possible to use needle-nose-pliers. Then insert the new one into the cartilage by just a simple press into the cartilage.

The new cartilage should be placed into the carrier once the old one is removed. You ought to remove the needle before installing it. Then rewiring should be done after its re-installation. After all, that then re-insert the needle. Then the next stage involves the fitting of its carrier into the original position. The aligning of the stylus is done using the gauge on the turntable. The nuts holding the cartilage to its carrier are then tightened.

It is then set so that it offers best tracking force for good and high sound quality production. For those with an inbuilt scale for tracking force, adjustment of the dial is done to produce a good tracking force. Adjust the height of the arm to ensure it is parallel to the surface of platter playing. Once the replacement is complete, a better sound is produced.

It is very essential to look at the following when purchasing turntables. Look at your budget keenly, and then buy what the budget allows. Decide whether to buy direct drive or a belt drive turntable. Some prefer automatic to manual. Make your choice on this. The cartilage in turntable should also be looked at before buying.
