How To Find Credible Nonprofits That Allocate Donations Well

By Dennis Wood

Whenever you give money to a nonprofit, it is mainly because you want to help them fund the cause that they are passionate about. That is why you want to ensure that the money you give is devoted to this. It can be quite disappointing to give money and then find out later on that it was not used properly. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for nonprofits that allocate donations well.

Before you give to any organization, you have to carry out due diligence. Find out if it has been properly registered for the cause that it runs. Check out what other people say about it and if there are any complaints as to what it does or as to how it uses its finances. If there are positive reviews, then this is a good sign. However, if there are lots of complaints and negative reviews about it, it is best that you rethink whether you want to donate to it.

If you are not sure about which nonprofit to give to you can approach the issue from another perspective. Outline which issues you are passionate about and you would like to support. Then check which nonprofits are the leading ones in this industry. You can then decide to be giving to these organizations. That is off course after you have done your investigations about the organization.

Find an organization that is open about their finances. They should publicly publish their financial records, so that donors can see how the funds given were used. They can publish their records on their website or send the records to donors every year. They should also have qualified accountants managing their finances and they should be audited on a regular basis.

Whenever you are making a decision to give, it should be because you have consciously made this decision. It should not be because you have been made to feel guilty to support the organization. That is why you should avoid making an impromptu or emotional decision. You can opt to either make large donations once in a while or small donations every month.

When you want to give cash, channel your contributions through the organization's website. You can also send them a check through mail. Do not give money over the phone since you cannot be sure whether the person calling you is legitimate or not.

There are watchdog groups that help to keep charities in check. Before you start dealing with any nonprofit organization, go through the database of the watchdog groups to see if the nonprofit is in good standing. Check with a few of the groups just to be sure. These watchdog groups point out any inappropriate behavior that a nonprofit might be engaging in.

Nonprofits help to make a big impact in the lives of thousands of people, so giving to these organizations will result in many people getting help. That is why you should not be scared to give because you think that your funds might not be used well. Just do your research and then you can donate to a credible organization.
