Ideas For Small Business Owner: Security System Check-Up

By Mark Mahaffey

If you have a business security system installed in your company, you probably rely on it heavily to keep you, your employees, and your assets safe. Even if you do not actively think about your system every day, you still know it is there protecting you, and that can bring great peace of mind.

But are you completely sure it is keeping you safe? The only way to know for sure is to check if often to make sure it is still functioning as expected. If you are relying on a system to keep you safe, but that system is not working, you are not safe at all, and the thief's job is much easier!

Perhaps you have a video camera surveillance system installed. Are you cameras working? It is true that even a non-functioning camera can deter crime (when robber sees a camera, he does not know whether it is working or not), it is still a good idea to make sure they are working as they are supposed to. You may need the recording in a court case.

What about your motion detectors? Have you tested them lately? If you have had a power outage or a power surge lately, they may be damaged and not working at all. It is pretty easy to test these: just create motion in front of them and see if your system is triggered.

Did you know that if your alarm system is not working it may just be unplugged? If you have an alarm system, make sure it is plugged in. Check this weekly. Also make sure the settings are correct. If someone was playing with the system, they may have messed up the settings to the point that you are no longer protected.

A good security system includes outdoor security lights that come on when it gets dark. But if you are not at your building at night, you may not know if these lights are working properly. Stay late one night to check your security lights to make sure all the bulbs are in good working order.
